Saint Valentine was a martyr during the third century. There are many legends and stories about his death and the time that he lived. The history of this Saint has been washed over with the showing of love and affection on this day. The commercial aspects make Valentines day a day that a great deal of money is spent to show love for others. School children share candy and valentines, couples have romantic dinners and flowers and candy are sent in masses to loved ones. This holiday produces many weddings and romances but also causes great sadness and lonliness to those that do not have a special someone. Simplicity is the best medicine for this day especially in hard economic times. A home made valentine or a baked good made with love is better shared rather than lavishing loads of money for one day a year. Instead of spending money on candy and flowers, donate that cash to a homeless shelter or to a charity that could use the help. With the economy like it is these days, money can be better utilized showing love to those in need.
